Saddam Hussein in court last month
7 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iraq's president has said that deposed Iraqi dicatator Saddam Hussein had confessed to "crimes" including killings committed during his regime.
President Jalal Talabani told Iraqi television on 6 September that an investigating judge had extracted confessions from Hussein about crimes "such as executions" that the ousted leader had personally ordered.
Talabani said that some of the confessions involved cases actively under investigation but he did not specify them.
Hussein and several aides will go on trial on 19 October on charges relating to the massacre of 143 Shi'ites in a town north of Baghdad.
The killings in Dujail in 1982 followed an attempt on Hussein's life.
Hussien could face the death penalty if convicted in the Dujail case.
