14 September 2005 -- Police say a car bomb was detonated today in a Shi'ite district of Baghdad, killing some 80 people and wounding dozens of others.
Police say the car was driven by a suicide bomber who drove into a group of construction workers waiting on a square in the Kathimiya district to be hired for daily work.
In another incident, police say armed men early today dragged 17 people out of their homes in Taji, a village north of Baghdad, and killed them.
The latest violence came one day after Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said the security situation in his country has improved. Talabani, speaking after talks with U.S. President George W. Bush in Washington, expressed hope Iraqi troops will be able to start replacing U.S. forces by the end of next year.
