19 October 2005 -- A Kyrgyz official today said that two people were killed in a riot that broke out at a prison facility near Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek.
Tursunbai Bakir-uulu, a rights official in the president's administration, told a news conference in Bishkek that inmates killed two of their fellow prisoners for allegedly collaborating with prison administration.
The riot started yesterday at the Novo Pokrovka prison when inmates began demanding better living conditions.
Bakir-uulu says the prison's staff and guards were forced to flee from the prison and guards have now taken up positions around the site's perimeter.
The prison is described as a strict-regime colony designed to hold people convicted of serious crimes.
