Zyuganov has twice been defeated in Russian presidential elections. He came in second to former President Boris Yeltsin in the 1996 vote.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said repeatedly that he will not try to seek a third term in office, as he is barred by the Russian Constitution from doing so.
