Insurgents Kill Seven Afghan Police In Ambush

(RFE/RL) 10 November 2005 -- Suspected Taliban rebels killed seven police officers and abducted two others in an ambush in southern Afghanistan.

A local governor said the police were attacked on 9 November in Shah Wali Kot district as they were driving toward Kandahar -- the former Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. The governor -- Jan Mohammed Khan -- said two of the three police vehicles were hit by rockets. Police in the other jeep managed to flee.

In separate incident, Khan said two villagers were abducted and beheaded by Taliban rebels in southern Uruzgan Province on 7 November.

He said the Taliban mistakenly believed the two worked as interpreters for the U.S.-led coalition forces.
