28 November 2005 -- Moldovan authorities say elections for the mayor of the Moldovan capital Chisinau have been declared invalid for a third time due to low turnout.
Ion Stratulat of the municipal electoral authorities said last night that in the 27 November election only 22 percent of eligible voters turned out. For the election to be considered valid, one-third need to cast their ballots.
Chisinau held elections on 10 July and 24 July, but both polls were declared invalid due to low voter turnout. The election for mayor of Chisinau, a city of 750,000, came after former Mayor Serafim Urechean abandoned the position to become a legislator in the Moldovan parliament in April.
By law, elections will be held again on 11 December.
