Turkmen Leader Gets Clean Bill Of Health

Doctors say President Niyazov's "good spirit" keep him healthy (RFE/RL) 14 December 2005 -- Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov is in good physical shape, according to doctors who yesterday conducted a routine medical examination on him in Turkmenistan.

ITAR-TASS quoted German Dr. Hans Meissner as saying that the test results were "even better than the previous ones."

Meissner, who performed open-heart surgery on Niyazov in 1997, said Niyazov's "inherent and immutable good spirit enables him to resist constant stress and manage physical strains" connected his work.

In February, a month in which Niyazov turned 65, the president underwent surgery on his left eye after admitting he could "hardly see" some of the people at an official event.
