Azerbaijani Students On Hunger Strike

16 December 2005 -- Several Baku State University students are on hunger strike to protest the expulsion of one of their classmates.
The Turan news agency reports they entered their third day of strike today.

On 28 November, the rector of Baku State University ordered the expulsion of fourth-grade student Turan Aliyev, saying he had violated internal discipline.

Aliyev in turn claims he was expelled because of his pro-opposition political activities.

It is not clear how many students are taking part in the hunger strike. Turan says the health of two of them is deteriorating.

The protesters reportedly belong to the Yeni Fikir (New Thinking) and Maqam! (Enough!) youth movements and to the youth movement of the Popular Front Party's reformist branch.
