5 January 2006 -- A lawyer for a Georgian citizen being tried on charges of attempting to kill the U.S. and Georgian presidents has asked the court to show clemency.
Addressing the Tbilisi court that has been trying Vladimir Arutyunian since early December, Liza Japaridze asked that her client be sentenced to no more than 15 years in jail.
Arutyunian was arrested in July, more than two months after reportedly throwing a live hand grenade at U.S. President George W. Bush and his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Saakashvili during a public appearance in Tbilisi.
Georgian officials say the grenade did not go off for technical reasons.
The 27-year-old Arutyunian, who reportedly killed a Georgian policeman while resisting arrest, faces life in prison.
