Ukraine Denies Hosting Secret CIA Prisons

(RFE/RL) 10 January 2006 -- Ukraine's government today denied that there are any secret prisons run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on Ukrainian soil.

Vasyl Filipchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, said "the very raising of that issue is absurd".

A Swiss weekly magazine recently published a fax, purportedly from the Egyptian foreign minister, that states that there are secret CIA prisons in Ukraine, Romania, Macedonia, Bulgaria and the UN-administered province of Kosovo.

The Council of Europe and several European Union countries are investigating reports of CIA-run detention facilities hosted in Europe and reports that European airports have been used by the United States to fly suspected terrorists -- some of them European citizens -- to secret camps.
