Azerbaijani Journalists Seek Information On Huseynov Probe

Elmar Huseynov (Turan) 11 January 2006 -- Azerbaijani opposition journalists are demanding that the authorities report on progress made in the investigation into the murder of Elmar Huseynov.

Huseynov, the editor in chief of the opposition news magazine Monitor, was assassinated in Baku in March 2005. Relatives blame the government for the killing.

Colleagues of the slain journalist have threatened to stage a demonstration in Baku on 12 January. But news reports say authorities have refused to authorize the rally.

Also today, one of the founders of the Elmar Huseyinov Foundation, Sahbaz Xuduoglu, said that the group is trying to arrange a meeting with Georgia's prosecutor-general, Zurab Adeishvili, in a bid to obtain information on Huseynov's two alleged murderers.

Azerbaijani officials say Huseynov was shot dead by two Georgian Azeris who fled the country after the killing. Georgian officials say the suspects are not in the country.
