Azerbaijan Urges Students To End Hunger Strike

(RFE/RL) 17 January 2006 -- Azerbaijan’s Youth Ministry is calling on a group of pro-opposition students to end a hunger strike.
In a statement carried today by the official Azertac news agency, the ministry described the protest movement as "undemocratic" and urges government agencies to settle their "misunderstanding" with the hunger strikers.

Earlier today, protester Namiq Feyziyev was hospitalized after suffering violent stomach pains and low blood pressure. Another three hunger strikers have been hospitalized in recent days.

The students, who belong to opposition youth movements, started their movement on 28 December to protest the expulsion of two of them from high school.

They say the expulsion is politically motivated. But the Education Ministry says the two were thrown out because of bad grades.
