UN Food Aid Convoy Torched In Afghanistan

(RFE/RL) March 5, 2006 -- The UN said today two trucks hired by the UN's World Food Program were attacked and torched in the Afghan province of Oruzgan.

The program said in a statement that the trucks were stopped early on March 2 and burned, destroying wheat valued at $9,300. The drivers reported being threatened and beaten.

The 29 tons of wheat was meant for about 1,200 people rebuilding a provincial road on a food-for-work project.
