U.S., Iraqi Patrols Sharply Increased In Baghdad

U.S. forces on patrol in central Baghdad (file photo) (epa) April 14, 2006 -- The U.S. military and the Iraqi army have sharply increased the number of patrols on the streets of Baghdad in an effort to contain sectarian violence.

U.S. Major General Rick Lynch said the number of patrols has increased from 12,000 in February to 20,000 since the beginning of March.

Lynch said the goal is to increase the visible presence of security forces and take the fight to insurgents who are trying to prevent the formation of a government of national unity.
