French Sapper Killed By Land Mine In Tajikistan

An Afghan soldier guards the site of a controlled explosion of land mines (file photo) (epa) April 19, 2006 -- A French officer has died during a mine-clearing operation along Tajikistan's border with Afghanstan.

Warrant Officer Gilles Sarrazin died after suffering severe injuries when a mine exploded. A Tajik man, Azam Asrorov, was wounded in the blast, the UN said.


The border with Afghanistan was heavily mined during Tajikistan's civil war between 1992 and 1997.
