April 30, 2006 -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today accused Iran of "playing games" in the dispute over its nuclear program, and she called on Tehran to halt uranium enrichment.
Speaking on ABC television's "This Week" program, Rice said the international community's credibility is at stake as it confronts Iran over its alleged nuclear weapons ambitions.
She said the choice is either to show that the international community means what it says, or to continue allowing Iran to defy it.
In Tehran, Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad today rejected talks with the international community without an acknowledgement of Iran's legitimate right to pursue nuclear technology.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Assefi also said Iran would show "maximum cooperation" if the UN Security Council returned the case to the jurisdiction of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency.
