Fighting has increased across southern Afghanistan (epa) May 19, 2006 -- An Afghan provincial governor today said that five Afghan police officers and eight suspected Taliban militants were killed in two separate clashes in Afghanistan's southern Ghazni Province.
Ghazni Governor Shir Alam Ibrahimi said the incidents happened in the Nanai and Waghaz districts of Ghazni on May 18.

Since May 17, about 80 people have been killed in some of the heaviest fighting Afghanistan has seen in years. The biggest clashes have taken place in southern Kandahar and Helmand provinces.

The spike in violence also saw two suicide bombing attacks on May 18, one in the western city of Herat, and the other in Ghazni Province.
