Iraqi Deputy Police Chief Killed

Aftermath of an attack on Iraqi police (file photo) (AFP) May 24, 2006 -- The deputy chief of police in Baghdad, Brigadier General Ahmad Da'ud, was today shot dead in the Iraqi capital.

This is the latest assassination targeting senior Iraqi officials.


The attack comes amid surging militant and sectarian violence in Iraq.


Sixteen people were reported killed today in apparent sectarian fighting in Al-Suwayra, south of Baghdad, while 11 died in a bombing outside a Shi'ite mosque in Baghdad late on May 24.
