EU Foreign Ministers Discuss Constitution

May 28, 2006 -- EU foreign ministers agreed today during a meeting in Vienna to wait another year before deciding on the future of the proposed EU constitution.

The meeting comes a year after the draft constitution was rejected by voters in France and the Netherlands, raising questions over European integration.

On May 27, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos insisted the document can be resurrected. He noted that 15 EU states representing 60 percent of EU citizens have already ratified it.

A recent poll showed barely half of Europeans see EU membership positively, and that many are concerned about the bloc's policy of inviting poorer states from the east to join.
