Red Cross Calls Iraq Relief Work Major Challenge

The International Committe for the Red Cross operates in many dangerous situations, in this case the hostage crisis in the Dubrovka theater in Moscow in October 2002 (ITAR-TASS) June 1, 2006 -- In a report issued today, the International Committee of the Red Cross says humanitarian relief activities in Iraq represented a major challenge last year.

The Red Cross said one of its Iraqi staff was killed in January 2005, and that a lack of security meant it was able to visit detainees only in a limited number of places under Iraqi control.


The organization also said it was able to visit detainees in three locations under U.S. authority.
