Uzbekistan Destroys 700 Kilograms Of Narcotics

(RFE/RL) June 26, 2006 -- Uzbek security forces today destroyed nearly 700 kilograms of narcotics seized in recent antinarcotics operations.

A pro-government information website, press-uz.info, quotes a spokesman for the National Security Services, Shukhrat Azimov, as saying the drugs include 430 kilograms of heroin, 182 kilograms of opium, 73 kilograms of marijuana, and eight kilograms of hashish.


The announcement coincides with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, and the release of the United Nations 2006 World Drug Report.


Uzbek law enforcement agencies last year seized more than 1,200 kilograms of illicit drugs, press-uz.info says, most of them from Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
