Britain To Increase Afghan Force

British Defense Secretary Des Browne (file photo) (epa) July 10, 2006 -- Britain plans to send almost 900 more troops and additional helicopters to support its soldiers in southern Afghanistan.

British Defense Secretary Des Browne made the announcement today in the British Parliament's House of Commons in London.

"As a result of today's announcement, the steady-state size of the Helmand Task Force will increase between now and October from some 3,600 to some 4,500 personnel," Browne said.

The announcement comes as NATO prepares to take over military operations in southern Afghanistan from the U.S.-led coalition.
