Tajikistan Seizes Nearly 2.5 Tons Of Drugs This Year

Some of the heroin seized on the Tajik-Afghan border in 2004 (ITAR-TASS) July 13, 2006 -- Tajikistan's counternarcotics agency said today that law enforcement authorities in the country have seized nearly 2.5 tons of narcotics so far this year.

The agency's director, Rustam Nazarov, said this is an 18.1 percent increase on the volume of drugs seized by this time last year.


Nazarov said nearly half of the amount seized was heroin.


Tajikistan borders Afghanistan, the world's biggest producer of heroin.
