Israel Targets Beirut Suburbs, Bekaa Valley

Israeli artillery firing into southern Lebanon on August 6 (epa) August 7, 2006 -- Israel renewed air strikes around dawn today on Beirut's southern suburbs.

Correspondents say there were at least six loud explosions in the suburbs of Roueiss and Beir Al Abed as Israeli warplanes flew overhead.


Meanwhile, authorities say 11 civilians were killed in two separate Israeli air raids in southern Lebanon early today.


Hizballah-run television says at least four Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon overnight during a fierce clash at the town of Houla.


In eastern Lebanon, Israeli planes overnight bombed roads in the Bekaa Valley and in the hills about 10 kilometers from the Syrian border.


Israel says the bombing raids in Bekaa were intended to disrupt supplies of weapons reaching Hizballah militants.
