(RFE/RL) August 24, 2006 -- There are conflicting reports about casualties caused by a U.S.-led operation in eastern Afghanistan today.
Afghan officials say the operation, which took place in the Shegal district of Konar Province, resulted in seven civilian casualties.

But U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Paul Fitzpatrick said the raid killed seven Al-Qaeda suspects and one child. Four other people were detained in the operation.
