Kyrgyz Opposition Calls For Constitutional Reform

(RFE/RL) BOSPIEK, September 17, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The Kyrgyz opposition has renewed its calls for constitutional reform at a meeting of the opposition grouping, the Congress of the Kyrgyzstan People.

The congress, which unites several political parties, unions and blocks, said it will demand the resignation of President Kurmanbek Bakiev and Prime Minister Feliks Kulov if the government does not meet its demands in the coming month.


RFE/RL correspondents report that more than two thousand people attended the meeting in the southern town of Bospiek. Some Kyrgyz officials also participated the open-air gathering.
