Ukraine's Nationalist Veterans Seek Recognition

(RFE/RL) October 14, 2006 -- Members of a Ukrainian World War II guerrilla movement and some 3,000 of their sympathizers gathered today in Kyiv to demand official recognition as war combatants.

The veterans were marking the 64th anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which fought both Nazi invaders and Soviet forces.

They want the government to grant UPA veterans the rights to war pensions.

Riot police halted hundreds of left wingers who had intended to march down Kyiv's main street to confront UPA supporters.
