October 26, 2006 -- Kazakhstan today confirmed its readiness to join a Russian project to build an international uranium-enrichment center in the eastern Siberian city of Angarsk.
The commitment was reaffirmed by Kazakh Prime Minister Daniyal Akhmetov, who met today in Moscow with Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's nuclear energy agency, known as Rosatom.
Russia and Kazakhstan in July agreed to set up three nuclear joint ventures, including one specialized in uranium enrichment.
Kiriyenko made it clear today that this facility will serve as a basis for the future international center, which Russia says will be open to any country wishing to develop civilian nuclear power.
Following talks with Kiriyenko, Akhmetov today met with his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Fradkov.
The two prime ministers discussed trade and economic cooperation.
