A Russian booster being prepared for a satellite launch in July (ITAR-TASS)
November 13, 2006 -- Russia's defense minister says the country's global satellite navigation system (GLONASS) will become available to civilians next year, and will be offered to commercial customers worldwide in 2009.
Sergei Ivanov says Russia now has 14 GLONASS satellites and plans to launch another three by the end of this year.
By the end of 2009, GLONASS is due to have a total of 24 satellites.
