Organized Crime 'Everywhere' In Russian Energy Sector

President Putin (right) listens as Prosecutor-General Yury Chaika delivers his speech on November 21 (ITAR-TASS) November 21, 2006 -- Russia's prosecutor-general says the oil and gas industry is pervaded by organized crime.

Addressing President Vladimir Putin and a gathering of law enforcement officials, Yury Chaika said "organized crime is everywhere in the fuel and energy sector, from oil rigs and gas stations to major oil companies."


Earlier, Putin had called for a crackdown on economic crime, which he said was frightening off investors.
