Issue of 'Forbes' that was cancelled (ITAR-TASS)
MOSCOW, December 1, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The most recent issue of the Russian edition of "Forbes" magazine has been withdrawn and the editor in chief has handed in his resignation because of a dispute with a Moscow billionaire, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Maksim Kalushinsky, editor in chief of "Forbes" Russia, says all 120,000 issues of the December issue were impounded or destroyed.
"The December edition should have carried an article about Yelena Baturina, the wife of the Moscow mayor and the only billionaire woman in Russia," he said. "The issue went to print, but because [Baturina's company] Inteko threatened legal action, our publishers decided not to publish this edition but to replace the article with another one."
Moscow property developer Yelena Baturina is the wife of Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov. She threatened to sue "Forbes" over a quote attributed to her in the issue. The quote on the cover said, "My protection is guaranteed," while the quote that appeared in the text of the article read, "Like any investor, I am guaranteed protection of my rights."
Kalushinsky tendered his resignation over the incident, but says it has not yet been accepted. He said he would retract it if the issue ran with the original article.
The publishers, Axel Springer Russia, have said the issue will be republished with the article and with changes to the quote on the cover.
