Displaced Iraqis Could Top 1 Million This Year Alone

(RFE/RL) February 16, 2007 -- The International Organization for Migration says as many as 1 million Iraqis could be displaced this year, in addition to the 1.4 million people already displaced within Iraq.

The organization warned in a statement today that almost 18,000 people have been forced from their homes in the past three weeks in central and southern Iraq.

The IOM said internally displaced Iraqis rarely receive food assistance and place a growing burden on the communities where they seek shelter.
