Turkmenistan Cancels Afghan Debt

February 21, 2007 -- Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov announced today that his government has written off nearly $4 million in debt owed by neighboring Afghanistan for electricity.

Berdymukhammedov said the debt has been accumulating since 2002 and was eliminated as a "goodwill gesture" to help Afghanistan recover from decades of war.

Turkmenistan has been supplying electricity at a discounted price to parts of northern Afghanistan since 2002.
