Luzhkov was officially nominated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 22.

With the pro-Kremlin Unified Russia party dominating the city legislature, Luzhkov is widely expected to be elected.

Opposition politicians have said the Kremlin wants to keep Luzhkov in power to help deliver votes in State Duma elections in December 2007 and in presidential elections in March 2008.
