July 12, 2007 -- Russia will reportedly shut down two early-warning radar stations based in Ukraine.
The two sites are located on the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea and the west Ukrainian border town of Mukachevo.
Russia's "Vedomosti" magazine quoted an unnamed Defense Ministry official today as saying that the two sites are outdated and would be replaced by more modern systems within Russia proper.
Moscow pays Kyiv $1.5 million in rent per year to operate the sites. The contract runs out at the end of 2007.
