Four Police Officers Killed In Blast In Daghestan

(RFE/RL) July 18, 2007 -- Four police officers were killed and six wounded today when a homemade bomb exploded in Russia's southern republic of Daghestan.

The bomb -- an artillery shell with a radio-controlled detonator -- exploded in a school playground in the town of Kizilyurt, where police officers had gathered to do physical training.

Daghestan has been plagued by shootings and other violence, some spilling over from Chechnya, some stemming from disputes between criminal gangs.
