Iran Publicly Hangs Two Convicts

Guards and spectators watch the public execution in Tehran (epa) August 2, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Two men convicted of killing a prominent judge and a police officer were publicly executed today in Tehran.

A journalist who witnessed the execution told Radio Farda that the two convicted men were surrounded by masked gunmen during the public hanging, and added that some 2,000 people were present.


Seven other convicts were hanged in Iran on August 1. More than 170 people were executed in the country in 2006.
