Romania: U.S. Calls Elections 'Orderly'

Washington, 5 November 1996 (RFE/RL) -- The United States says preliminary reports characterize Sunday's parliamentary and presidential elections in Romania as orderly and taking place without significant incidents.

U.S. State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns says the United States took a great interest in the polling and had many observers and monitors watching the voting.

Burns took note of the strong showing by the opposition Democratic Convention (CDR), led by Emil Constantinescu. But he said the United States will wait for final official results before making any further statement on the elections. He commented to reporters before Romania's former communists conceded defeat in the parliamentary vote.
