Bulgaria: Anti-Communists May Unite For Elections

Sofia, 5 March 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Bulgaria's top anti-communist parities today discussed final details on an agreement to join forces in the April 19 parliamentary elections.

The three parties include the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), the "People's Union" and the mostly ethnic-Turkish "Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF).

Our correspondent in Sofia reports that talks on a single list of candidates are now finished and that the agreement could be signed as early as tomorrow.

The UDF is the strongest party going into the elections, but an alliance with other anti-communist forces would increase their chances of controlling a two-thirds majority in parliament. Such a majority is needed in order to pass constitutional amendments sought by the anti-communists.
