Pristina, Yugoslavia; 24 March 2000 (RFE/RL) - NATO Secretary-General George Robertson and NATO Supreme Military Commander in Europe General Wesley Clark are heading to Kosovo to mark today's first anniversary of the start of NATO's air campaign against Yugoslavia. During the visit they are expected to emphasize the success of NATO's intervention to end Serbian repression of Kosovar Albanians.
Clark and Robertson are due to visit the ethnically divided city of Mitrovica, the site of repeated clashes between ethnic Albanians and Serbs.
Supporters and opponents of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic will hold rallies, concerts, and prayer vigils to mark the anniversary. Workers' unions, student groups, opposition-dominated local authorities, and the Orthodox Church will protest against Milosevic.
The Yugoslav government will hold several events to mark what it calls the people's "heroic resistance" during the NATO campaign. Yesterday, Milosevic marked the anniversary by laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier near Belgrade.
