Insurgents Strike In Kabul And North Of Country

Insurgents have carried out attacks in the Afghan capital Kabul and in the north of the country.

At least five Afghan soldiers and police were killed in an attack by three suicide bombers on an army recruiting center in the city of Kunduz.

In Kabul, two insurgents wearing explosives attacked a bus carrying soldiers, killing at least one.

Kabul police say the attackers opened fire on the bus but were killed before they could detonate their explosives.

Meanwhile, one soldier in the NATO-led international force was reported killed today, bringing to 700 the number of foreign troops killed this year in Afghanistan.

It's the highest death toll for foreign troops in Afghanistan since the Taliban were toppled in 2001.

On Dec. 16, U.S. President Barack Obama released a war strategy review showing U.S. and NATO forces are making progress against the Taliban and al Qaeda but that serious challenges remain.

It said the Taliban's momentum had been stopped in much of Afghanistan and reversed in some areas.
