Several mortars struck Syrian villages near the Turkish border early on October 10 and heavy machine-gun fire could be heard from the Turkish side. Turkey's armed forces have bolstered their presence along the border and have been responding in kind to gunfire and shelling from northern Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad's forces are battling rebels. Meanwhile, a wounded Free Syrian Army colonel was brought to Turkey late on October 9 in a boat before being rushed to a hospital in the southern province of Hatay. (Reuters)
