Displaced Afghans Await Aid In Bitter Cold

Children wait in the snow at a camp for displaced people in Kabul.

Women arrive to pick up aid packages, which include blankets and warm winter clothes for children, distributed by the UN's refugee agency.

For some, the aid distribution came too late. News agencies report that a 3-year-old child died of exposure at one refugee camp on December 28.

Aid workers throw packages to recipients.

Some recipients have been critical of the deliveries, saying that they need fuel and food more urgently than blankets and clothes. Some displaced people reportedly sell the contents of the aid packages in order to buy food.

Other aid groups are also assisting the refugees with deliveries of food and charcoal throughout the winter.
