After a sudden snowfall struck Belarus and much of Eastern Europe, officials in Minsk said an estimated 70,000 residents hit the streets on March 19 for what's known as a "subbotnik," a day of voluntary, unpaid labor. Snow shovelers worked alongside heavy equipment in the cleanup effort, which was said to include work collectives, students, political parties, and NGOs. (Video by RFE/RL's Belarus Service)
