The mother of an American journalist killed by Islamic State militants says the United States let her son down.
Diane Foley told CNN she was "embarrassed and appalled" by the government's handling of her son James Foley's case.
A video released on August 19 showed a hooded man beheading Foley, who went missing in Syria in November 2012.
In an interview aired on September 12, Diane Foley said there were people in the U.S. government who wanted to help but "the nature of the bureaucracy...was such that we were not helped."
She said she got the feeling the family's efforts to secure her son's release "were an annoyance" to the government.
She said a rescue attempt came too late and that "I really feel that our country let Jim down."
President Barack Obama outlined a strategy to combat Islamic State militants in a speech on September 10.
