Ahmadinejad Takes Exception To 'Insults'

President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has warned election rivals that they could end up in jail for insulting him.

Ahmadinejad, who has suggested the Holocaust is "a lie," said opponents have appropriated the smear tactics once used by Adolf Hitler.

Ahmadinejad has been accused by challengers of lying about the country's economic situation, including the inflation rate.

RFE/RL's Radio Farda and others report that Ahmadinejad has vowed to respond to the accusations in a televised statement tonight.

Ahmadinejad made the comments during a speech at a mosque at Sharif University.

Members of the Sharif University Islamic Society had issued a letter ahead of the president's visit telling him that he was not welcome.

Meanwhile, a video is making the rounds in the Persian blogosphere that appears to show Ahmadinejad being whisked out the back door of the university while students shout slogans in favor of reformist rival Mir Hossein Musavi. The chanters shout, "Liar! Liar!" and "Ahmadi, Bye, Bye; Ahmadi, Bye, Bye!"
