Benigno Aquino, the son of two democracy heroes, has been sworn in as the new Philippine president.

More than half a million people attended the inauguration ceremony in Manila.

Aquino, the Philippines' 15th president, won an election in May on promises to lift his country out of poverty and end corruption.

Aquino's parents are revered for their opposition to the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

His father, Benigno Aquino, Jr., was an opposition senator during the Marcos era, who was assassinated when he returned to the Philippines from U.S. exile in 1983.

His mother, Corazon Aquino, became president after a "people power" revolt swept Marcos from office three years later. She died of cancer in August.
