U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas amid concerns about a crisis in the peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel.
U.S. officials said Clinton met with Abbas on September 24 in New York City.
The meeting comes as the Palestinians have threatened to pull out of the negotiations if Israel does not extend a freeze on new Jewish settlement building in the West Bank.
Jeffrey Feltman, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs, said U.S. officials had been urging Israel to extend the moratorium, and had also been making clear to the Palestinians that it is in their interest to continue the talks.
Abbas said after emerging from the meeting with Clinton that the talks brought "nothing new until now," before he added he would have another meeting with Clinton on September 25.
Abbas is also scheduled to address the UN General Assembly later today.
