EU Delegation Holds Talks With Tajik President

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon

DUSHANBE -- A European Parliament delegation has held talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

The delegation's chairwoman, Ona Jukneviciene, said the major issues discussed at the meeting on April 9 were the European Union's further economic and financial assistance to Tajikistan and ways to tackle widespread corruption there.

She said the EU's financial aid to Tajikistan must be used in an effective and transparent way.

Jukneviciene told RFE/RL that the EU plans to allocate 66 million euros ($100 million) to Tajikistan's energy sector and 15.5 million euros in humanitarian aid.

She added that such issues as Tajik election law reform, freedom of speech, and obstacles to the development of democratic institutions were also under discussion.

Jukneviciene noted that Tajikistan's parliamentary election next year will be a major factor for the development of EU-Tajik relations.
