The European Parliament is due to include a discussion of the situation in Kyrgyzstan on its agenda when it meets later today.

Catherine Ashton, the European Union's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said parliamentarians would consider the recent referendum in Kyrgyzstan that moved the constitution toward a parliamentary, rather than a presidential, system of government.

Ashton called on Kyrgyz authorities to ensure the planned October 10 elections to parliament are carried out in full accordance with EU standards.
